I have
often been asked that question – “What is the difference between “Ballroom
Dancing, and “Dance Sport”? Ballroom Dancing, as records show, is and has
been for over 100 years, the most popular recreation in the western world.
New Zealand is away up there with the best of them. I recall the times when
we enjoyed a great night of dancing, and during the night, there was the odd
competition for the more adventurous couples. It was highly entertaining,
we cheered on our favourites, and it gave us something to strive for.
Over
the last 20 or so years, the social aspect has been dropped by many
teachers, and the “specialist” competitor has appeared. Winning is
everything! Today that “Dance Sport” faction is deeply into costumes, TV
shows, and wearing the right makeup. “Dancesport” people don’t go to
“dances”, socialising is not on their
agenda!
Us
“Ballroom Dancing” people don’t care who wins. The dancing itself is
everything.
In our
club we derive our enjoyment from dancing the famous old traditional social
dances, with more recent examples added for good measure. We ain’t no one
horse dance club, we teach ‘em all. Come on! ‘Av a
go!
Surprise yourself!
